Villa Corchi

Clad in cork and built to a minimalist design from raw and natural materials, Villa Corchi is a modernist pleasure palace with a 20m-long bio pool and fabulous views.

Villa Corchi was finished at the end of 2019 and is a daring architectural project that adheres to the idea that less is more. The position and layout of the property, with its balance of curves and straight lines, vast windows and terraces, is expressly designed to maintain a continuous relationship with the shimmering sea.

Built on three different levels, the minimalist design leads you from room to room and floor to floor, merging a core blend of materials, including wood, cement, stone and metal. Taking inspiration from nature, the house is covered in cork and was conceived as an oasis of high design based on sustainable principles with a view to being a house in which to relax and reset.

Every little detail has been carefully considered and much of the work was carried out by local artisans. From the Bulthaup kitchen to the Thonet furniture, the chosen pieces are sculptural and dramatic.

This is a property where the outside spaces are as much a part of the design as the inside ones and guests will find numerous shaded places to eat, drink and relax. The 20m-long pool has no chemicals and uses water from the naturally filtered lake. A swim here can be accompanied by a snooze on a lounger in the shade of the carob trees.

The south coast of the island is on the doorstep and the rich history and culture of towns such as Modica, Ragusa, Syracusa and Noto are easy to reach. Byzantine, Moorish and Baroque architecture provides the perfect foil to the modernity of this fabulous villa.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The three double bedrooms with their own private bathrooms are divided over the three floors of the property. Spacious and simply decorated, either with pine panelling or plain walls, they are uncomplicated, private, comfortable and cool in the heat of summer.

The principal bedroom is on the first floor, accessed by stairs from the kitchen. It has an en-suite bathroom and a large terrace with expansive sea views.

The second bedroom is on the ground floor. It has an independent entrance, stunning views of the sea and direct access onto the lawn.

The third bedroom is on the lower ground floor. A private outdoor area is the perfect spot for reading and the room can be accessed from both outside and inside.

Bathrooms

The principal bathroom is en-suite while the other two are next to their accompanying bedroom. All differing slightly in design, and crafted by local artisans, the designs include curved walls, poured concrete, wood and metal. Facilities include a shower, bidet and WC. There is a guest bathroom, too.

Kitchen

The property is entered at living room level and five steps lead to the open-plan kitchen. Crafted in natural materials such as wood and stone and with a poured concrete floor, the high-spec Bulthaup kitchen and Gaggenau appliances offer guests everything they might need. Sliding doors spread across one wall open onto a large terrace with impressive views over the garden and pool to the sea beyond. There is a shaded dining table on the terrace next to a shaded seating area, while inside, the round Thonet dining table and chairs occupy a simple yet chic dedicated space in the broken-plan kitchen.

Living rooms

Villa Corchi offers huge choice when it comes to sitting and relaxing, both inside and out. The central body of the property is entered through the living room which is simply furnished with sculptural Thonet armchairs. The smooth concrete floor has glass walls on either side leading to terraces and big views. The interplay of shapes and textures, as well as the landscape beyond the windows, provides all the necessary decoration. Guests can also find various lounge spots outside, in the sun or shade, to be enjoyed as a group or alone in the simple company of a good book.

Other rooms

There is a guest bathroom and an outdoor shower.
