Our own project

Our desire for Umbria, for having our own 'casale' there, dates back to 2001. Through a very close friend, an Italian lady who lives in The Hague, responsible for our first steps on the long road of learning the Italian language (and cucina!), we discovered Cittá della Pieve and its surroundings. We got to know the agriturismo 'Antica Frateria Poggio al Piano', the great place where we spent our first days in September 2001.

Ever since we have come back to the same part of the Umbrian region on all our travels to Italy, since we love the friendly people, the strong tastes of the excellent food and the wonderful, central though quiet and relaxed location in the country. We took the opportunity to visit a lot of different sites with many real estate agents in various parts of Umbria. We got to know the entire region better and were convinced where we would like to buy something appropriate.

In Spring 2006 we got in touch with a good local Real Estate Agent. The large offer of suitable properties across the entire region, easily made accessible through a very clear website took us where we wanted to be. We were able to buy a plot of land with permission for a construction project.

Initial construction work started at the end of the winter period, in February 2007. By then, we had marked the position of the house on the plot.

Meanwhile, we made an extensive plan on furnishing and decorating the house as well as on how we wanted to create the garden. With so called 'mood boards' we were able to discuss with our family and friends the right atmosphere and combination of furniture, fabrics and colours. Fortunately, there was more than enough time to get these things organised: we chose new fabrics for some beautiful old chairs we found in the Netherlands and we discussed with local craftsmen in Umbria how we wanted the antique dressers, tables and chairs to be restored.

Construction works proceeded as planned. We had put a penalty clause in the contract for any delivery later than the end of October 2007, but this fortunately turned out to be unnecessary. Everything was ready and done according to our wishes before 1st November 2007! We took a full week to make the house ready to move in: cleaning, hanging lamps, receiving all kind of services and goods, like plumbing, electricity, washing machine, etc. etc.

Christmas 2007 was the first moment we were able to spend together with our parents in the new house. As you can imagine, it was an unforgettable one...

We concluded that year with the final deed ('atto definitivo') at the notary and a big lunch ('pranzo') for all the workmen who had done such a wonderful job: our dream, having our own property in Umbria, had come true!

The precious experiences we have been able to get from our own construction project have given us the energy to work with others and deliver the same wonderful results. We are most happy to discuss with you all topics you have on your mind concerning your property in Italy.
