Blu di Mare

The Adriatic is the middle stripe in a view that includes the sky, the green of the olive grove and the dark blue of the pool at this gentle yet coolly minimalist villa, where guests will quickly relax into its many charms.

Villa Blu di Mare is a contemporary renovation of a traditional lamia with a large courtyard, beautiful terrace and stunning pool. Located in a rare hillside position amongst the olive groves, the property celebrates both the traditional and the modern, with a sublime view of the Adriatic Sea.

Elegant lines, white walls that reflect the sunlight and a dark blue pool that mirrors the clouds, on the rare occasion that there are any, create a tantalising exterior, with sleek white steps leading to the roof terrace and the lower terrace. Inside, the villa offers a cool refuge from the Puglian sun with old, stone walls left bare, newer walls in white and a careful curation of furniture from brands such as Gervasoni and Royal Botania.

Eight guests are comfortably accommodated in four doubles all of which have the refreshing addition of an outdoor shower on a private terrace.  The villa’s design capitalises on the mesmerising view, offering guests a dining table under the loggia and a sitting ‘room’ open on two sides on the terrace.

The easy-going vibe of the villa is enough to keep guests happily lounging all day. For those who have the energy to do more than dip in the pool and laze over al fresco lunches and dinners, there are bikes to borrow. The property is moments away from the coast and its pretty rocky coves, the Baroque splendour of Ostuni and Lecce, and the wealth of other towns and villages that are dotted over this captivating part of Italy’s heel.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The property has four bedrooms. The principal en-suite has a large handmade bed and a private terrace planted with big cactuses and accommodating an outdoor shower. The other three doubles have comfortable modern four-poster beds and are simply decorated in neutral colours, relying on the views outside to provide colour and inspiration.

Bathrooms

Two bedrooms, including the principal one, have their own en-suite with twin basins. The other two rooms share a bathroom. However, each room has its own terrace with an outdoor shower. The high-tech fixtures and fittings complement the smooth, unfussy design and neutral colour scheme.

Kitchen

The kitchen has a back wall of old stone with a low run of steel cupboards, including the oven and five-burner gas hob. Expertly equipped with a large American fridge freezer and the necessary finds such as a Nespresso machine and a blender, guests can cook and dine here with ease. The French windows conveniently lead to an organic fruit and veg garden where guests are welcome to pick what they like. A bleached wood table with Enza Fasano ceramic tableware completes the picture inside. Outside, a loggia shades the outdoor kitchen and BBQ as well as the beautiful stone dining table. Lit by rattan pendants in the wavy shape of stingrays, this is the perfect al fresco spot, adjacent to the outdoor living room and with views over the pool and olive groves to the sea beyond.

Living rooms

The exposed tuff stone entrance to the property leads into a living room with a big stone fireplace. The perfect place for some quiet time away from the heat of the sun in summer or to congregate in the cooler months, it is complemented by an outdoor living room. Covered above but open on two sides, here the wafting white curtains offer privacy and extra shade if needed. The sofa, coffee table and easy chairs make it the perfect place to curl up with a book or to share an aperitif, from where you can watch those in the pool or keep an eye on what’s going on in the outdoor kitchen.

Outside

Villa Blu di Mare is approached through an electric gate and via a private drive that leads to ample parking. The beautifully designed exterior staircases of the single storey villa are lit and lead to both the roof terrace – an ideal spot from where to watch the sun set over the Adriatic, and the lower terrace. There is a small organic kitchen garden off the inside kitchen that guests can pick from, and the front of the property has been beautifully landscaped to make the best of the views and the sun with sliding doors to the outside. The pool is 10mx4m and is 1.4m deep with steps; unheated, it is open all year round but is best between April and October. The terrace has six sunbeds and there is a double lounge bed at the pool’s edge. Guests are encouraged to make the most of the climate and relax in the shaded outdoor sitting room, dine under the loggia facing the pool and cook local produce on the BBQ. Each bedroom has access to its own terrace and outdoor shower, while the main bedroom has its own private courtyard. Mature olive trees frame the view to the sea and firmly root the villa with its modern additions to this ancient land.

Notes

A wonderful external staircase leads to the terrace, the ideal place to admire wonderful sunsets with uninterrupted views of the sea.
