Casa Campia

The architectural lines and beautiful interiors of the two buildings that make up Casa Campia are a perfect blend of Italian and Moroccan influences

Casa Campia is an ingenious renovation of a former water tower and a small chapel that was originally a stable. The property's fabulous ridge-top setting looks over the olive groves and vineyards of Puglia's beautiful Salento region, far south in Italy’s heel.

The tower contains a sleek kitchen and living room on the ground floor and a bedroom and bathroom upstairs, while a wrap-around portico provides lots more shaded living space outside. Just across the garden is the former chapel that has a large double room and an en-suite bathroom under its beautiful stone arches.

While the Italian architectural lines and natural materials of the buildings are the stars of the show, the pared-back interiors and exterior seating spots look to Moroccan influences, with cushions and rugs in jewel colours.

Indoor-outdoor living is easy here and guests could happily spend most of their time lazing in hammocks, splashing in the pool and dining on the delicious food of the region. But that would be to miss out on the stunning coastline, the baroque splendour of Lecce and Nardò and visits to wonderful vineyards producing the celebrated wines of the area.

Bedrooms

The property has two bedrooms. In the former chapel, which was originally a stable, the king-size double bed is in a beautiful stone arched niche and the tall, A-frame, wooden ceiling is painted white, providing a calm and inviting space. The textures of the stone, the wood, and the rattan pendants, as well as a pop of colour in the cushions, are all the decoration required. Double metal-framed glass doors lead to the garden.

The double bedroom in the tower and its accompanying bathroom are stacked above the living area with steps from the bedroom leading up to the bathroom. The room has a striped Moroccan rug and bright cushions to add colour, texture and comfort to the beautifully calming space.

Bathrooms

There are three bathrooms. The upstairs bathroom in the tower has a freestanding tub as well as a shower. The clean lines of the bath tub and the glass screens either side are softened by a bright Moroccan rug on the floor and a hot pink Berber floor cushion.

The en-suite in the former chapel has a shower and double basins. High performance fixtures and fittings sit beautifully in this simple arched space.

There is a further shower room on the ground floor of the tower.

Kitchen

Occupying one end of the living space on the ground floor of the tower, the monochrome kitchen is a sleek, sophisticated affair. The complementary textures of the gloss white cabinetry, the marble countertop, the large stone arch and the black barstools make this an elegant space. It is expertly equipped so guests can do culinary justice to the fabulous local produce, and metal and glass doors lead to the perfect al fresco dining spot under the portico.

Living rooms

On the ground floor opposite the kitchen, the sitting area is cosy and simple. A long, comfy sofa, whitewashed ceiling beams and a seagrass pendant make this a perfect indoor snoozing, reading or chatting spot. Double doors either side lead to the garden where there is a whole load more lounging potential, either on the inbuilt sofa with its floor cushions and pair of wooden swings, or in the hammocks under the pergola or on any of the various chairs that make the most of this beautiful space.

The property is cleaned between guests’ stays, and more frequently on request. The pool and garden are maintained throughout the year.

Outside

Casa Campia has lots of outside space, accessed from both sides of the tower and by double doors from the former chapel. Clever landscaping means that the terraced garden with its pretty stone walls is full of different spaces and interesting plants including orchards of citrus and other fruit trees and a vegetable garden. Wrap-around porticoes and a shaded terrace with hammocks offer sitting and dining areas while the smallish but perfectly formed pool has knock-out views across vineyards and olive groves. The lawns are bordered by lavender, cactuses and vines, while tall pines, palms and cypresses remind guests of their southern location.

The property is perfectly placed to enjoy all the wonders of the Salentine peninsula. Just a few kms from the house you can find Squinzano and Campi Salentina, where to get lost in between a local and mediterreanean cuisine dining experience or wandering while shopping amongst open-air markets or in some of the most authentic grocery shops (bakeries, buthcers, fish shops). Furthermore, still within a throw-stone from the house, there are at least three wineries where you can sample the much-celebrated local varieties. The stunning scenery and swim spots of the Porto Selvaggio nature reserve are 40km away and for those interested in a round of golf, Golf Club Acaya is 37km away or San Domenico, at Savelletri di Fasano, is 95km away. For those wishing to ride, ASD Eden Ranch is 42km away.

The property is surrounded by citrus and olive groves in the peaceful Salento region of Puglia, not far from the warm, clear waters of the Ionian Sea and the mix of rocky coves and sandy beaches of its stunning coastline. There are plenty of wineries nearby, as well as a wealth of byzantine and baroque architecture, including palaces, chapels and churches of towns, such as Nardó and Gallipoli. Lecce, otherwise known as the Florence of the South, is just 15km away. Cited as one of the most beautiful cities in southern Italy, it is heralded for its baroque splendour.
