Casa Gilda
A fabulous house for six, with a standout pink steel front door, in one of the pretty white towns of the Itria Valley
Casa Gilda is named after the architect-owner’s dog. This delightful detail offers the perfect introduction to this design-led townhouse in Carovigno, in Puglia’s Istria Valley.
Once a convent, the building had been empty for years before Luca Baldazzi bought it and thus became both architect and client for a renovation that combines traditional Puglian architecture with a modern, design-led, colourful aesthetic. The result is joyful.
Influenced by the Mediterranean, the house’s separate areas are accessed through a courtyard, external stairs and terraces. Here, equal importance is given to both the interior and exterior spaces which together, offer a colourful oasis. The house is a year-round proposition - the town remains lively and lived in throughout the cooler months, when guests can light the fire and get cosy.
Dark tones in the three bedrooms provide calm while the white walls of the living spaces are kept lively with pink doors and window frames as well as brightly coloured ceramic tiles in both the kitchen and lining the little plunge pool outside. Shapes are a subtle, recurring theme with square shelving and tiles, circular windows, mirrors and chair seats, and even triangular lamp shades.
While the sharp design is an unfurling joy throughout the property, comfort is a priority, and this is a fabulous house for a family or group of friends who want an original base for exploring the baroque towns and double coastline of this part of Puglia.
