Casa Gilda

A fabulous house for six, with a standout pink steel front door, in one of the pretty white towns of the Itria Valley

Casa Gilda is named after the architect-owner’s dog. This delightful detail offers the perfect introduction to this design-led townhouse in Carovigno, in Puglia’s Istria Valley.

Once a convent, the building had been empty for years before Luca Baldazzi bought it and thus became both architect and client for a renovation that combines traditional Puglian architecture with a modern, design-led, colourful aesthetic. The result is joyful.

Influenced by the Mediterranean, the house’s separate areas are accessed through a courtyard, external stairs and terraces. Here, equal importance is given to both the interior and exterior spaces which together, offer a colourful oasis. The house is a year-round proposition - the town remains lively and lived in throughout the cooler months, when guests can light the fire and get cosy.

Dark tones in the three bedrooms provide calm while the white walls of the living spaces are kept lively with pink doors and window frames as well as brightly coloured ceramic tiles in both the kitchen and lining the little plunge pool outside. Shapes are a subtle, recurring theme with square shelving and tiles, circular windows, mirrors and chair seats, and even triangular lamp shades.

While the sharp design is an unfurling joy throughout the property, comfort is a priority, and this is a fabulous house for a family or group of friends who want an original base for exploring the baroque towns and double coastline of this part of Puglia.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

There are three en-suite bedrooms, all decorated in dark, soft, calming Mediterranean tones, including the bed linen, and smooth, coloured, microcement flooring. The different textures and materials combine to add interest as well as comfort.

Bedroom 1
The principal bedroom has a large double bed with a headboard in Tissage Mahieu linen wallpaper. The walls are a soft tobacco colour by Oikos while the TV cabinet was designed by the owner. This is a lovely, cocooning space, where guests are bound to sleep well.

Bedroom 2
A barrel-vaulted ceiling provides a cosy, sculptural feel in this twin room that is painted a deep ochre colour, inspired by the veined red travertine marble sink. There’s also a bath for those who like to soak.

Bedroom 3
A double, with a basin in the window that was made from a piece of leftover marble from a local quarry. A designer’s haven, there is a fun interplay of shapes, with square shelving, the rectangular marble basin, a round mirror and a pyramid-shaped bedside light designed by the owner in collaboration with Nassi Lamp.

Bathrooms

Each of the bedrooms is ensuite. The twin room has a bath while the other two have showers. Beautiful basins made from local marble or stone are ravishingly beautiful and there's even a basin with a tap shaped like a bird.

Kitchen

The well-equipped kitchen lies at the heart of Casa Gilda and is a communal space with a large island at its centre. Glossy, square, Spanish ceramic tiles in a beautiful conker colour from Ferrés line the counter and island tops, while the ends and sides of the island are mirrored with overlaid wooden battens that cast diagonal shadows on the floor. This is a lovely, light space to cook in and non-cooking guests can sit and chat to the cook on Thonet barstools. There are doors out to the courtyard across which is the sitting room.

Living rooms

The living areas at Casa Gilda have light-coloured, brushed concrete floors and traditional Puglian white walls. The iconic pink steel front door from the street opens into the dining room with its long wooden table and Beni floor rug. Guests then continue through into the kitchen. The living room is across the internal courtyard from the kitchen and has a high, barrel-vaulted ceiling and an open fireplace with a ready supply of logs for the cooler seasons. The Sesann sofa by Tacchini is coupled with a Knoll butterfly chair and a mirrored floorlamp is the Chiara Grande di Marrio Bellini by Flos. The artwork is Alphabetic Worries by Adam Lupton and a shelf planted with greenery matches the green tiled step that’s repeated on the outside of the pink framed sliding door. This is a large yet cosy space that will have guests making design notes.

Outside

Casa Gilda is a townhouse so, while the outside space isn’t vast, it is masterfully designed and stretches across different levels. A courtyard separates the kitchen and dining room from the sitting room on the ground floor while a plunge pool is tiled in verdant green ceramic tiles from Spain. Stepped Mediterranean planted beds intersperse with benches and day beds with joyous striped mattresses. Upstairs, a bamboo awning shades the terrace where jolly yellow spaghetti chairs by Fiam offer a glorious spot for reading, coffee or aperitivi. Sun or shade, the outside space offers a sanctuary from the streets beyond the gate as well as a cooling breeze even in the heat of summer.
