Il Barone

The sensitive restoration of this grand country villa showcases its warm stone, soft light and beautiful architectural lines, all matched by the elegance of the pool and gardens

The beauty of this unique historic house lies in the light touch of its magnificent restoration, the four hectares of gardens, orchards, olive groves and vineyards, and its fabulous location in the heart of Salento, where cucina, beaches and culture collide.

Il Barone is a handsome property that has retained its original features. Pale carparo stone carvings, vaulted ceilings, alcoves and ancient frescoes provide all the adornment required. The simple sophistication includes a careful edit of deep mattresses, upholstered headboards and design-led chairs.

The large kitchen is a playground for self-catering cooks and large enough for a chef to get to work, should you choose to be cooked for. Food comes above most things in this part of Italy where fresh produce is abundant and delicious. There are dining tables both inside and out to accommodate lengthy lunches and late dinners, while the large pool and the wide steps that lead down to it, sing to the elegant architectural proportions.

Whether it’s the sparkling Ionian sea and a long stretch of pretty coastline, the restaurants, bars and food opportunities or the cultural pull of Baroque architecture that draws you away from Il Barone, its tranquil setting and extraordinary atmosphere will lure you back. It is an incredible property for a holiday with family and friends.

Il Barone was mentioned by the Condé Nast on the November 2023 issue "The best 11 Villas in Puglia"

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The four bedrooms on the first floor lead off a beautiful central upstairs sitting room. Pared-back elegance means that the original features, such as the high ceilings, an ornate alcove, stone floors, thick distressed plaster walls and shuttered windows, take centre stage. Colourful headboards and lampshades add drama while the deep mattresses provide comfort. There are two doubles and two bedrooms that can be made up as twins on request. There is an additional bedroom and en-suite bathroom separate from the main house that can be made available for a larger party then 8 guests (at extra cost).

Bathrooms

There are two large bathrooms, both of which honour the architectural space with integrity. One has a huge fireplace and a sculptural tub alongside it, while the other has a shower within an alcove.

Kitchen

The kitchen takes up the end wall of a large room that is open plan with the downstairs living room. A beautiful long wooden table separates the two spaces. Fully equipped and with an electric oven and hob, it’s a fabulous space for cooking and entertaining. A large glazed arch gives access to the outside dining area and garden.

Living rooms

The downstairs sitting room is the perfect place for chatting and lounging while others get busy in the kitchen. Deep sofas and a waist-height fireplace make it cosy in the cooler months, too.

Outside

Il Barone lies within four hectares of olive groves, fruit orchards, vineyards and a large, private walled garden with a 12m pool. Approached through electric gates there is ample parking. The front of the house has a paved, cypress-bordered path leading to the triple-arch entrance. To one side is an outdoor seating area. Like the interior, the beauty of the property’s exterior spaces lies in simple lines and a lack of fussiness. The pool’s pale paved surround is bordered by lawn and fruit trees, and the sun loungers look back to the handsome building and a tall palm tree that wouldn’t look out of place in LA. There is a pizza oven and a BBQ and the organic ingredients used in the natural bathroom products are grown on the estate. Guests can wander where they please and pick from the kitchen garden and the fruit trees.

Leisure & Activities

Activities

The estate is a short and pretty drive away from Nardó, a wonderful town that lies south of Lecce and north of Gallipoli, on the Salentine peninsula. The town itself has a rich history that can be explored through the byzantine and baroque architecture that includes palaces, chapels and churches. The Ionian coast is just a few kilometres away and no stay at Il Barone would be complete without exploring its stunning mix of clear water, rocky coves and sandy beaches. Discover Santa Caterina with its seafront eateries and Santa Maria al Bagno for its beautiful cove. Lecce, otherwise known as the Florence of the South, is also a must. Cited as one of the most beautiful cities in southern Italy, it is heralded for its baroque splendour and the incredible light as the sun bounces of the white stone.
