Il Borgo

The vaulted ceilings, original frescoes and terrazzo floor tiles offer lofty Italian authenticity, complemented by a fresh Scandi design aesthetic

The beauty of Il Borgo is found in its exquisite location - just a short stroll from the village’s delightful bars and restaurants and less than ten minutes from the magnificent coves and beaches of the Adriatic. But it is also to be found in the complementary marriage of soaring Italian architecture and classic Scandinavian interior design within.

Sleeping eight guests in four spacious en-suite bedrooms, the original frescos and terrazzo floor tiles have been meticulously restored while the interior edit is one of carefully considered Scandi minimalism by the Scandinavian fashion designer owner. Soft paint colours complement the tactile materials of stone, wood, linen and seagrass, while light pours in and encourages guests to venture out into the Mediterranean garden with its balconies and terraces, dining and sitting ‘rooms’ and its small but inviting pool.

The house encourages playful exploration thanks to its layout across different levels. Guests have so much space in which to rest and relax with a kitchen that will make the most reluctant cook want to at least lean on the beautiful island and chat. This is a property that is made for sophisticated yet relaxed holidays with family and friends.

The clear water and rocky coves and beaches of the Adriatic coastline are practically on the doorstep, along with the Baroque towns that dot the Puglian interior, offering a host of places to discover from this tranquil yet social Salentine house.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

There are four double, en-suite bedrooms: one on the lower floor and three on the upper floor which is accessed by two flights of external stairs. The bedrooms celebrate the building’s beautiful architectural features, such as vaulted ceilings and carefully restored patterned floor tiles and wall frescoes. Decorated in soft, muted colours, the focus is on comfortable beds, a careful edit of furniture such as a chair or a mirror, celebrating the enormous ceiling height and the sense of space and serenity. One of the bedrooms has a single daybed as well.

Bathrooms

There are five bathrooms in total: four of them en-suite, a fifth one on the lower floor along with a guest loo, and an outdoor shower by the pool. Making the most of the quirkiness of the space, the showers are in niches or by a window and are simple in decoration with high-performance fixtures and fittings and beautiful stone basins.

Kitchen

The kitchen is on the lower floor at one end of an open-plan room that includes a dining table and a spacious living area with doors to the outside. Lit by two pendant lamps that hang from the high vaulted ceiling over the stone island, it is expertly equipped with everything guests need. Its unfussy minimalism is softened by the use of beautiful natural materials and it offers plenty of space for everyone.

Living rooms

The living areas on the lower floor have lots of different places to sit and relax on furniture that is both comfy and aesthetically pleasing. The Scandi interior design fits perfectly with the building’s grand proportions and guests have several outdoor spaces they can sneak off to, to chat or read in blissful solitude.

Other rooms

There is a spare shower room, a guest loo and a laundry room, all on the lower floor.
