Il Pellegrino

A passion project of simple lines and volumes, Il Pellegrino takes nature as its inspiration and the result is a sophisticated and restful retreat

Il Pellegrino is built on the dreams of a scientist, an engineer and an entrepreneur with a shared passion for Puglia’s enduring sunshine, glorious coastline and delicious food. This sensational property - a clever blend of old and new in an exquisite location in the heart of the Itria Valley – is their dream come true. And what a peaceful, beautiful dream it is.

Using best conservation practices and local materials, talented stonemasons have restored the old buildings, including a trullo that dates to the 18th century. The new building was designed to complement the old, and both blend effortlessly together, around a quiet inner courtyard.

Three of the double en-suite bedrooms occupy the old trulli and the lamia, while the fourth is in the newer space. A beautiful floor made from local stone runs throughout the property, connecting old with new and the buildings with the land they sit on. There is a kitchen and sitting room both inside and out, giving guests reason to come and stay in any season.

With room to connect with family and friends as well as to find a quiet space to be alone, the real pull of this place is its beautiful connection with nature. Approached along a straight gravel drive through the olive trees, the Mediterranean garden blurs the line between wild and cultivated and guests can snooze in the shade, jump in the pool, dine outside on pizza cooked in the pizza oven and properly reset.

With the delightful Adriatic coast less than half an hour away and the charming towns of the Itria Valley even closer, guests have so much choice in how they spend their stay. Doubtless, you’ll wish you had booked a second week. In fact, there's nothing stopping you.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The property has four double en-suite bedrooms. Three of them are in the old buildings that include the Main Trullo and the Tiny Trullo that overlook the pool, and the Lamia which has its own private gravel courtyard, while the fourth is in the contemporary building. Two of the rooms have space for an extra child’s bed. A beautiful floor in local stone extends throughout the property and the arches, niches and curves of the architecture provide all the necessary decoration. The beds are top-notch comfy while linen curtains add simple elegance.

Bathrooms

The indoor bathrooms follow the same principal as the bedrooms – the aesthetics are provided by the architecture and the beautiful materials, while the brushed brass fixtures and fittings are hi-spec. Each bathroom has a built-in shower, while the Main Trullo has a fabulous square concrete bath as well.

Kitchen

The living room and the well-equipped kitchen are in the contemporary building which leads to the outdoor living space. Guests have the choice of cooking in a more conventional manner inside, or outside where there is a traditional pizza oven and a BBQ.

Living rooms

The indoor living room has a barrel-vaulted brick ceiling and large windows that frame the long gravel drive through the olive grove on one side, and the inner courtyard on the other. Built-in poured-concrete sofas are within easy reach of a bookshelf and offer a lovely spot to rest in the heat of the day. Double doors lead to a twin space outside, ensuring there is plenty of room for everyone.

Outside

The property is approached down a long straight driveway through the middle of an olive grove, which provides privacy as well as beautiful views. The outside sitting and dining areas and kitchen extend out from the contemporary building, providing a whole other living space that can be used throughout the day, catching the sun and the light at different moments. The design marries form with function and includes apertures in the wall that perfectly frame the views. Concrete built-in sofas are as good for serious chats as long siestas and the kitchen has as its centrepiece a traditional pizza oven, as well as a BBQ and the perfect spot for rustling up aperitivi. This carefully considered property connects the visitor to the landscape, and the Mediterranean garden and the gravel courtyard with its ancient olive trees ensure this connection is not lost. The 40sqm pool has a large terrace with sun loungers and a bucolic view for when you look up from your book.
