Aura

The clean horizontal lines of this modernist villa and pool are built from beautiful local materials

Aura is an exceptional modernist villa in a commanding position just five minutes by car from the pretty baroque town of Noto. Within easy reach of the beaches of the Vendicari nature reserve and of the archaeological sites at Syracuse and beyond, it could not be better placed for absorbing the rich history, culture and swim spots of Sicily’s south east corner.

The villa’s simple lines and neutral tones were designed by Gordon Guillaumier to showcase the dramatic setting. Luxe local materials include marble and chestnut, while colourful Sicilian tiles form an artwork of their own along the fireplace wall of the sitting room.

The palatial size of Aura means that its ten guests can easily find some privacy as well as enjoying its multiple outdoor dining spaces, lounge areas and pool. Local stone and smooth white stucco are layered like a two-tier cake, with glass doors as the filling and a metal pergola with its playful shadow pattern, as the decoration on top.

Explore the beaches and towns nearby and finish with an aperitvo in Noto at golden hour before heading back to the refined comfort of this magnificent villa for ten.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

There are five bedrooms in total, all with air con and decorated in neutral tones with colourful textile wall hangings. The main sleeping area has three rooms all with a view of the sea and direct access to the panoramic terrace. These are arranged as one en-suite double, and two further doubles (one can also be configured as a twin) with a shared bathroom.
An external staircase leads to two more en-suite doubles, also with sea views. This clever layout balances privacy and comfort, perfect for groups of friends or extended family.

Bathrooms

There are six shower rooms. All minimalist in design, it’s the beautiful natural materials such as marble and wood that do the talking.

Kitchen

The expertly equipped kitchen is a large space where the central feature is a stunning chestnut dining table. Opening onto the terrace above the pool on one side and a veranda for dining al fresco on another, there’s plenty of room to revel in the joy of cooking at the marble island.

Living rooms

An open doorway leads from the kitchen to the large sitting room. Here, the fireplace wall is clad in a geometric pattern of beautiful Sicilian tiles in brown and blue, adding an authentic local touch to the modern interior. The opposite wall is almost entirely glass, framing the sea view to perfection and leading out onto the terrace above the pool.

Outside

Aura is oriented to make the most of its fabulous setting and has a large pool (18m x 4.5m) on the lower terrace. Here, there is a shaded sitting area and dining table, as well as sunloungers and large cushions surrounding the pool. A second veranda with a round dining table and large built-in benches, is up a level, looking down the length of the pool. However, the main outdoor dining table is in the courtyard at one end of the house, half shaded by a vine-covered pergola and perfect for al fresco dinners, it is outside the kitchen. All the bedrooms have sea views and doors to either the upper or lower terrace. Guests can happily glide about barefoot, finding space in the sun or shade, while the modernist architecture is softened by Mediterranean planting.

Leisure & Activities

Activities

The breathtaking beaches of Sicily’s south-eastern corner are just 15 minutes away by car. Lido di Noto (8km) is perfect for those who like the convenience of a beachside restaurant, while the beaches inside the Vendicari Nature Reserve are wild and unspoilt and include Eloro, Pizzuta, Calamosche, San Lorenzo and, if you’d rather throw caution to the wind, as well as your clothes, Marianelli. For a round of golf, the 18-hole I Monasteri course is less than 40km away. Noto and the surrounding area has a long history of producing wines, in particular Nero d’Avola, a red, and its white counterpart, Moscato Bianco. Head for a vineyard and cellar tour, or a tasting at a winery, or if you’d rather skip straight to a glass try somewhere along Corso Vittoria Emmanuelle in Noto for the best people watching.

We would be delighted to help you plan the details of your stay at Aura in advance. The following are available on request: private chef, regional cooking classes, nanny, driver, boat rental, massage therapist, yoga instructor and tourist guide.

The stunning baroque town of Noto is just five minutes from the villa by car. It’s one of the most charming spots in Italy and its centro storico is worthy of a film set. Go in the late afternoon when the 18th century sandstone walls glow ochre and the people-watching is at its best. You’ll also be wooed by its colourful interiors and fabulous array of restaurants that offer everything from pizzas to fine dining, all using beautiful, slow-grown local ingredients. Syracusa (35km) is of archaeological interest and is matched in its splendour by both Ragusa (60km) and Modica (40km) - the latter is known as the city of 100 churches and is famed for its chocolate production.
