Donnalucata

This former farmhouse in the Sicilian countryside has been carefully restored and renovated to accommodate a large group of family and friends

Donnalucata is a large and handsome villa in the bottom right corner of Sicily, just 8km from the beautiful baroque town of Modica.

Surrounded by a big walled garden with a pool and a vegetable patch, the four-year renovation to turn a farmhouse and its outbuildings into an eight-bedroom property that can accommodate up to 24 guests was completed in 2021.

The main building houses a living room and a well-equipped kitchen that opens onto the dining room. There are five double bedrooms, one with a double sofa bed and each with their own bathroom. There is also a cellar with a tasting room so that guests can try the celebrated local wines.

Three more suites are in a separate building, each with a mezzanine and an en-suite bathroom. The rooms are big enough for two of them to have an extra single bed and for seating areas as well. The simple neutral tones of the decoration are sophisticated while the beds are large and comfortable.

Meanwhile, an old stable has been turned into a second kitchen and dining room with a long wooden table running lengthways down the cobbled floor while the original stone manger has been kept along one wall. A large door leads outside to the veranda and barbecue.

There is space, comfort and privacy in abundance and while guests could happily never leave this impressive property, there are many wonderful places nearby that are worthy of exploration. The towns of Noto, Scicli and Ragusa Ibla join Modica in their baroque splendour and the coast isn’t far. The Vendicari Nature Reserve near Noto is extraordinarily beautiful but then, that’s this corner of Sicily for you, and Donnalucata is a fabulous place to base yourselves.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

There are eight double bedrooms (plus an additional four single beds and two double sofa beds). All slightly different but sharing the same smart hotel suite vibe, the rooms are a generous size with aircon for the summer months and heating for the winter. Two of the bedrooms have private terraces.

Bathrooms

All the bedrooms have their own private bathrooms and, including guest loos, there are 11 in total. Colourful, graphic tiles complement the simple white basins and the hi-spec fixtures and fittings, while simple touches such as a chair or basket add character. There is an outdoor shower, too.

Kitchen

In the main building the expertly equipped kitchen has a central island, dark grey cabinetry and light wooden work surfaces. It opens onto a beautifully proportioned dining room which has impressive artwork and a dining table that seats 12 on linen-skirted dining chairs. There is a second kitchen with a long refectory dining table in a former stable where the original manger, wooden beamed roof and cobble floor have been carefully restored. An outdoor kitchen is located under one end of a vine-clad veranda where guests can dine in the shade during the day and which is lit in the evenings. The long table seats 20. There is a barbecue.

Living rooms

The living room in the main house is beautiful. A tall, vaulted ceiling is offset by a pretty cornice, and shuttered windows on two walls flood the room with light. Another less formal sitting room has more comfy sofas and armchairs. There are little places to sit and relax throughout the property, such as under the tall curve of the stairs in the main building and in most, if not all, of the bedrooms. Outside, a veranda offers soft seating with views of the pool and garden.

Other rooms

A wine cellar with a tasting room is available to guests and is on the lower-ground floor of the main house. There is a laundry room.
