La Rada

A design-led villa and beautiful Mediterranean garden that’s perfect for friends or family looking for style and comfort in this rich corner of Sicily

La Rada is a fabulous beachfront villa set back from the clifftop at Caponegro, not far from the baroque splendour of Noto and the wild beautry of the Vendicari nature reserve in Siciliy’s south-east corner.

A big sister property to La Caletta, the villa is split across two adjacent buildings. The front house is closest to the pool and has sea views, while the other house is set slightly behind, offering a quieter space. Each house has three double bedrooms, accommodating 12 guests in total.

The property’s design is architecturally sophisticated and the carefully curated interiors reflect different cultural influences, from local Sicilian ceramic tiles to African textiles. The villa has been built and decorated with beautiful, top-end materials, including polished wood and richly veined marble. The bedrooms are wonderfully cocooning, each with a private terrace, while the living spaces are big and open.

The garden has been as carefully designed as the villa, with stunning landscaping, a large veranda that wraps around two sides of the building, and a lovely pool with a decked surround.

Looking back at the house from the cliff top, it feels for a moment that you could be looking at the Hollywood Hills. Which brings us nicely to Noto: a must-visit baroque town with a centro storico so elegant you’ll feel you’ve stumbled onto a film set. Go in the late afternoon when the sandstone walls of the 18th century baroque architecture glow ochre and the people-watching is at its best. Then retreat to this sensational villa in this glorious corner of Sicily.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The villa can accommodate 12 guests in six double en-suite rooms that our split equally between two adjacent buildings. The ground floor in each has a double bedroom with an en-suite shower opening onto a private, shaded terrace. Likewise, each house has two bedrooms on the first floor: one with a sea view, both with access to a terrace.
Simply decorated in soft neutrals, there is North African-inspired artwork and beautiful natural materials, including wood, linen and seagrass. All bedrooms have air conditioning.

Bathrooms

The en-suites are all shower rooms. Individually decorated, some have zellige tiles, others marble, all with high-quality fixtures and fittings.

Kitchen

The vast living space features the kitchen, dining table and living room. A mix of high-end materials, including beautiful, grained wood and marble, local stone and tiles, it’s a space that’s fabulous as well as functional. If the expertly equipped indoor kitchen isn’t enough, there’s also an outdoor kitchen on the veranda along with a second dining table. Whether inside or out, this is a great villa for entertaining.

Living rooms

The living area is a celebration of textures and materials with big squishy cushions, local ceramic floor tiles, and a retaining wall in local stone that runs both inside and out, seen through the floor-to-ceiling window. It’s a lovely space in which everyone can be together or for seeking out quiet time when the sun is at its hottest.

La Rada is a villa where the external areas have been designed as an integral part of the living space. A veranda wraps round two sides of the front house, with floor-to-ceiling glass that, on the ground floor, leads from the indoor kitchen to the outdoor one and to the large wooden dining table. Built-in benches form a sitting area, perfect for post-pranzo snoozes. There are other shaded, decked lounge areas throughout the hectare of lush Sicilian garden that has been cleverly landscaped and planted with olive trees, aromatic herbs, and ornamental plants. A path winds through the greenery to the wood-decked 11m x 3.5m pool and out the gate to the cliffs beyond.

Leisure & Activities

Activities

The breathtaking beaches of Sicily’s south-eastern corner are a delight. Guests just need to head to the end of the garden to find the cliff path from where it’s a short walk to a small cove. Walk a little further and you’ll find the Kairos Beach Club with a rocky beach, a restaurant and a pizzeria; Contrada Gallina (3km) is the nearest sandy beach. Otherwise, choose between the Lidos di Avola, Noto and Fontane Bianche or, travel a little further and you’ll find the beaches inside the Vendicari Nature Reserve that are wilder and completely unspoilt. They include Eloro, Pizzuta, Calamosche, San Lorenzo and, if you’d rather throw caution to the wind, as well as your clothes, Marianelli. For a round of golf, the 18-hole I Monasteri course is just 20 minutes away. Noto and the surrounding area has a long history of producing wines, in particular Nero d’Avola, a red, and its white counterpart, Moscato Bianco. Head for a vineyard and cellar tour, or a tasting at a winery, or if you’d rather skip straight to a glass try somewhere along Corso Vittoria Emmanuelle in Noto for the best people watching.
