Rossa

The bold, red-tiled pool, the local sandstone walls and the interplay of shapes and materials all build on the rich creative heritage of Sicily

Rossa is an incredible, in Spring 2023 completed, single-storey villa for four with breathtaking views of the delightful baroque town of Noto.

Built in natural materials by talented local craftspeople using traditional methods, the villa itself is thoroughly modern. Its amorphous form, interplay of soft shapes and the red pool which gives it its name, are matched by a spacious comfort found both inside and out.

The front of the villa faces west, giving spectacular sunset views of Noto, while the bedrooms face east. The careful design and organic forms found within the structure of the building as well as in the careful edit of interior pieces are worthy of an art gallery, except they are conceived with comfort and practicality in mind.

The main living space is full of natural light. A joyful play of shapes is found in the roundness of the ceiling-hung fire, the dining table and the floor rugs, the curve of the wall and of the Edra sofa, and in the clear glass bubble pendant lights. A well-equipped kitchen leads onto the terrace and to a plancha grill and the outside dining table. Bedrooms, meanwhile, are designed to be cool and dark in the heat of summer and cosy in the cooler months.

The pool is the star of the show with its illusion of red water from the scarlet tiles that line it and the splendid views beyond. A covered outdoor lounge area shares the same panorama and guests could happily hop between pillows and pool for their entire stay. But that would be to miss out on the Baroque towns of not just Noto, but Ragusa and Modica, too. And then there are the beaches – Lido di Noto or the wild unspoilt places within the Vendicari Nature Reserve.

Rossa is more than just a villa, it’s also a work of art with a location that is very hard to beat.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The two hotel-style bedrooms are contemporary in style and calm in feel, with sanded concrete floors, air conditioning and Boffi ceiling fans, and an east-facing terrace with bean bags. The first room can be set up as a twin or a double and has a bath at the end of the bed and a large walk-in shower. The toilet is separate. The second room is a double and has a small desk and an en-suite shower room. Both rooms have curtains that block the light.

Bathrooms

The first room has a freestanding Boffi bath at the end of the bed where you can soak looking onto a small terrace. The large shower and basin are behind a partition wall. The second bedroom has an en-suite shower room divided from the room by a sliding glass door. In both, high quality fixtures and fittings mix with natural materials and contemporary design.

Kitchen

The main body of the villa houses the living and dining spaces and the kitchen. A sanded concrete floor runs throughout the property and in this space it is complemented by a curved sandstone back wall that faces a straight wall of doors and windows onto the terrace and pool. The Boffi kitchen is at one end and it is expertly equipped with everything guests need to make the most of the exceptional ingredients available locally. A Carrara marble worktop and pale wooden cupboards bring natural materials to the modern design. A beautiful dark wood round dining table sits beneath clear glass bubble pendant lights where guests can dine looking across the terrace, towards Noto. There is a teak dining table on the terrace itself with a large Umbrosa parasol for shade as well as an outdoor kitchen with an electric plancha.

Living rooms

The lounge area of the main room is focused round a curved wall bench and the ceiling-hung fire. The play of shapes, particularly circles, is continued with the white Edra sofa. There is underfloor heating for the cooler months and a Bluetooth soundbar. Outside, a herringbone brick terrace with built-in comfy sofas is shaded by a concrete portico that has a cut-out circle and beautiful rose gold pendant lights. The design is as spectacular as the views it overlooks.

While the entrance gate is shared with another property, Rossa enjoys total privacy. The west-facing terrace stretches the length of the building and has a teak dining table and plancha grill at one end, in front of the doors to the kitchen. The 14m x 3m pool has a 5m infinity edge with first-class views of Noto and its cathedral. An outdoor lounge area next to the pool has a pavilion feel - with its big cushioned bench seat and sunset views, it is a glorious space. The bedrooms have small, private east-facing terraces for that morning cup of coffee and several chapters of your book.

Notes

Please be aware that there are steep banks in the garden of this property and children should not be left by themselves on any of the outside terraces, including by the pool.
