Villa Cappero
A gorgeous sea-view retreat for four, surrounded by lemon trees and shady pines
Villa Cappero is a traditional property for four surrounded by shady pines and strawberry trees on the southwest coast of Pantelleria. Part of a large and beautiful estate that is scattered across the rolling hills of the island’s national park, the views are breathtaking.
The villa is one of several properties brought back to life by the Italian owner and a local architect, and its traditional, thick, lava-stone walls and domed roofs are cleverly designed to keep out the heat.
There are three separate buildings, one for each of the two double en-suites, and the third for the kitchen and sitting room. Dry stone tufa walls mark out the outdoor living spaces and provide protection from the wind for guests and garden alike.
The décor is luxurious in its simplicity – although there is wifi and satellite TV, too. Think cool linen and more than enough cushions, loungers, sofas and dining spots to keep everyone happy.
A small (3mx3m) pool surrounded by rosemary bushes is perfect for cooling off as you admire the Mediterranean planting that has been encouraged to flourish in the volcanic soil. Thanks to its proximity to the coast of North Africa, the island has many Arab influences, including a walled Moorish garden of lemon trees and date palms that was laid out in the 19th century and retains its original irrigation system.
Pantelleria is an island where guests can enjoy unparalleled levels of privacy. Unlike other Italian islands, it isn’t somewhere to see and be seen, but rather a place that will wrap you in its unusual charm and allow you to fully relax. Venture beyond the beauty of the estate and the rewards of this volcanic landscape are plentiful: clear warm sea, hot springs, natural saunas and thermal spas, plus simple restaurants serving great food and delicious local wine, all without the usual crowds.
