Casella Christmas

Approached by an avenue of iconic Cypress trees, the house, garden and pool are the stuff of dreams, in a setting that is exquisite, even by Umbrian standards

Casella, a farmhouse that dates back over 400 years, has Christmas written all over it. Exquisitely renovated, it is perfectly in step with its beautiful setting, where vine-covered hills, meadows and woodland ripple out from the river valley. As if this wasn’t romantic enough, the approach to Casella is along an avenue of Cypress trees that hugs the upwards curve of a hill, shouting ‘Italia’ to approaching guests.

The whole set-up is picture-book pretty, entirely private and yet not far from the cosmopolitan buzz of Perugia, making it the perfect house for a multi-generational Christmas or New Year celebration.

Accommodating ten in five en-suite bedrooms, there is space and comfort in abundance. Here, the property’s original features are the unflashy stars of the show. A soft colour palette reflects the landscape, as does the careful edit of natural materials including different woods, cotto tiles and Carrara marble. You’ll find beds big enough for stocking opening, a dining table that is perfect for a dinner party, fancy or otherwise, and a woodburning stove to snooze in front of. Or head to the upstairs telly room to flop in front of a Christmas film.

There’s plenty of space for guests to find themselves a quiet corner and a kitchen that’s a delight to cook in although you could always hand over to a private chef for a special dinner or for your entire holiday. There’s even a covered outdoor dining and sitting area with a chimneyed fireplace: wrap up warm and enjoy a Boxing Day lunch looking out at the wooded hills reaching to the Appenines.

Casella is just five minutes away from Antognolla, one of Italy’s most celebrated golf courses, and Perugia, with its art galleries, shops and restaurants can be reached in less than half an hour. Head here to admire some of the world’s most treasured Renaissance art, to tick off your Christmas present list or just to enjoy the centro storico of this university town. Afterwards, Casella will welcome you home like an old friend.

Bedrooms

Casella accommodates ten guests in five double en-suite bedrooms. As with the rest of the house, the restoration includes cotto floors, beamed ceilings and soft coloured walls. All the bedrooms are calm, spacious and restful, with both air conditioning and room fans, and box-spring beds that are fabulously comfortable. The principal bedroom is at the top of the house and includes a sitting area and a free-standing bath.

Bathrooms

All five bedrooms are en-suite and, unusually for Italy, there are three free-standing baths, including one in the principal bedroom. Modern, high-performance fixtures and fittings blend with blond wood and beautiful Carrara marble.

Kitchen

The expertly equipped kitchen lies four steps up from the open-plan, living and dining area and is perfectly framed by the larger-than-usual doorway. The room’s modern aesthetic fits smoothly into the old building - glossy, sculptural pendant lights hang over the long central island that has a wooden breakfast bar at one end. Beautiful antique cotto floor tiles and carefully preserved ceiling beams give a feel of the building’s history while everything else is new, making it an easy space to cook as well as be in. The doors at one end of the island lead to the porch where there is a fabulous outside dining and seating area, warmed by a proper fireplace, when needed.

Living rooms

Traditionally, the living space would have been on the first floor in a farmhouse such as this, with the livestock in the barn on the ground floor. The cows, of course, are long gone, and the ground floor is now a fabulous living space at one end, where traditional features, such as beamed ceilings, cotto floors and a large stone fireplace with a woodburning stove, take centre stage, creating a gorgeously calm, delightful space. At the other end, next to the kitchen, is the dining table for ten. An open staircase leads to the first floor where the building’s original living space has been transformed into a further sitting area, with a large screen and another lovely fireplace with a log-burning stove.

There is a separate laundry room with a washing machine and tumble dryer, as well as a small study that can be used as an office.

Cleaning

The property is cleaned both before and after your holiday and on Mondays and Thursdays during your stay. Linen is changed weekly, including during longer stays, and further cleaning can be arranged upon request.

Outside

Casella sits in 5 hectares of private land where, as with the property’s interior, it wears its luxury credentials lightly. The Mediterranean-planted garden fits comfortably around the house which is approached along a Cypress-tree-lined avenue. There is a 12m x 5m heated pool with an automatic cover that is angled to make the most of the views and is set at a perfect distance from the house. The same views can be enjoyed from the beautiful, tiled portico that is warmed by an outdoor fireplace – note the pretty twisted chimney pot – that allows guests to sit outside for much of the year. Further terraces in front of the house and little pockets of garden make the outdoor areas just as lovely as those inside the house itself.

Activities

This beautiful valley has a long tradition of producing fine wines and is fast becoming an acclaimed 'terroir' – we can arrange wine tours and tastings at the neighbouring vineyard and restaurant that are within walking distance of the house (see the winery HE RE). The local area is excellent for hiking, climbing and mountain biking and at the right time of year we can set you up on a truffle hunt. However, one of Casella’s biggest draws is that it is just ten minutes away from Antognolla, a Robert Trent Jones II-designed golf course that is one of the best in Italy. It helps that the scenery is stunning and includes a medieval castle that can be seen from every green, and that the clubhouse at the accompanying Six Senses Hotel also serves delicious food.

Happenings

The world-famous, annual Umbria Jazz Festival takes place in Perugia in the first two weeks of July. Previous artists include Diana Krall, John Legend and Lady Gaga. Gubbio hosts its own annual festival, La Festa dei Ceri, in May. The town has wonderful Easter celebrations as well as being famous for having, reputedly, the largest Christmas tree in the world. Umbria is a foodie hotspot, and its culinary joys are celebrated with various food festivals throughout the year, especially in the summer. Please ask for more details.

The property lies in a peaceful river valley and is surrounded by woods, meadows, vineyards, hills and olive groves. The views are incredible, and guests have all the privacy of this rural idyll, yet it's just ten minutes’ drive from Pierantonio, the nearest village. Umbertide is a little larger and about 15 minutes away, while the university town of Perugia is about 25 minutes by car. Here you'll find lots of restaurants, bars and shops as well as the National Gallery of Umbria that houses an impressive collection of art from as far back as the 13th century. Antognolla, a renowned 18-hole golf course, is just 4km from the house.

Prior to arrival, your villa will have been fully sanitised, including all surfaces, objects, kitchen items, curtains, sofas, throws, pillows, toys, and in and around the pool.
