La Pergola

The beautiful gardens and pool that surround La Pergola have been designed with the same lightness of touch as the stylish interior

La Pergola is a beautiful villa for eight in the hills of Le Marche. Its private setting in this beautiful rolling landscape influenced a careful renovation that celebrates the garden as much as the rooms inside.

Everything that could be preserved was, including the beamed ceilings and rough stone walls. Vintage finds, handcrafted furniture and original artwork followed. Then in came the new: sleek concrete floors with underfloor heating, local tiles and select design pieces by Kartell, Casa Lumi and Charles Eames.

The location informed the warm interior colour palette – beautiful olive greens and sandy whites, as well as natural materials, including wood and linens, to create a cohesive whole where guests can kick back in comfort.

The four en-suite bedrooms are comfortable and charming, particularly the top-floor suite with its bath, and sitting room next door. And then the garden is every bit as lovely as the house. Palm, olive and cypress trees give a holiday vibe, as do the saltwater pool, mass of comfy sunloungers, BBQ, terraces and pretty Mediterranean planting. There are lots of places to laze with a book, to snooze, to eat, to drink or swing in a hammock.

Leave the gates and you’ll find all the supplies you need just 3km away in Petritoli. Just fifteen minutes and you’ll be at the nearest beach, and a tiny bit further still and you’ll be at the fine white sandy beaches of the Riviera de la Palme. Otherwise, the Sibillini Mountains are an hour away. You may, of course, have found your place on the pool lounger and feel no need to venture anywhere.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The four spacious double bedrooms are an elegant mix of traditional features, such as beamed ceilings and shuttered windows, and more modern design pieces. Each is individually decorated, although comfy beds come as standard. The top floor is home to a fabulous bedroom suite, with a bath in the bedroom under the eaves. Guests sleeping up here have the floor to themselves, which includes their own large sitting room with a fireplace, sofa and wonderful views. The bedroom itself is accessed by old low double doors that adults will have to duck to go through.

Bathrooms

Each bedroom has its own private bathroom with a large walk-in shower. A mix of natural materials makes each of them individual. The top-floor suite also has a bath in the bedroom.

Kitchen

The L-shaped kitchen is a beautiful reflection of the house’s location, thanks to its olive-coloured wall tiles, wood-burning stove, natural materials and the wonderful light from windows on every wall. It’s also expertly equipped so you can enjoy cooking, or sit back while a chef does it for you. The long wooden dining table is in the larger part of the room with doors out to the dining terrace.

Living rooms

The main sitting room has double doors to the terrace and a mellow Mediterranean feel thanks to the pale stone walls, the beamed ceiling and the large L-shaped sofa. There is more choice: the top-floor suite has a big sitting room, there is a pull-down screen and projector for movies, a lounge area on the terrace outside as well as under the pergoda further into the garden.

Other rooms

There is a study with high-speed wifi and two desk spaces, a utility/laundry room, and an outdoor shower.

Outside

The garden at La Pergola is, essentially, another series of rooms with beautifully considered landscaping. Two covered terraces are attached to the house - perfect for breakfast and aperitivi. The saltwater pool (13.2m x 5m with a maximum depth of 1.4m) can be heated by an air source heat pump and the true signifier of being on holiday are the palm trees and olive trees that frame the view. You can admire this from a choice of sunloungers, with parasols for shade, and a bank of flowers behind. Gravel paths wind through the grass to the covered terrace with a seating area, dining table and BBQ, surrounded by iconic cypress trees, roses and delicate Mediterranean planting. You’ll be spoilt for choice come siesta time: will it be a hammock, a daybed, a firm lounger or a squishy one? Practicalities include an outdoor shower and parking.
