La Solda

Modern design meets traditional Umbrian charm in this sophisticated villa close to the hilltop town of Città della Pieve

This spectacular and characterful villa for six was completed in the summer of 2021. Designed and project managed by SpecialUmbria, its interiors are a celebration of modern European design, while its exterior and grounds draw on traditional Umbrian charm.

Colourful and comfortable, the villa sleeps six in three double, air-conditioned, en suite bedrooms. The dark green, handcrafted kitchen and pantry are fitted with top-of-the-range appliances and along with the rest of the rooms, include myriad beautiful design features, such as the fabulous light fittings and floor tiles. The property's Dutch owners are passionate art collectors and pieces from their collection hang throughout the house.

Meanwhile, outside, age-old olive trees frame the property while stunning views stretch for miles over the surrounding hills with Monte Cetona behind. Clever landscaping, a lovely pool (14mx4m) and a welcoming veranda running along the garden side of the house make it the ideal place for seamless indoor-outdoor living. In fact, thoughtful, smart and eyecatching design throughout make this property truly stand out, both in the heat of summer and throughout the cooler months.

La Solda's unique location offers total privacy in this beautiful and ancient rolling landscape, yet Città della Pieve is just moments away. A medieval hilltop town that has escaped mass tourism and still exudes genuine Italian character, it is often referred to as ‘the picture-perfect Italian town’. It remains the perfect place for la passeggiata, with stunning historic buildings, pretty places to sit outside for a drink and lots of lovely local restaurants. Click here for more information.

Monteleone d'Orvieto is another hilltop gem only 10 minutes' drive away where we can also recommend the best places to go before you are lured back to the comfortable elegance and privacy of La Solda.

La Solda is managed exclusively by Special Umbria.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The three double bedrooms are on the first floor, which, because the house is built into a slope, is the ground floor when you come in through the front door. Each with a view across the valley, all three bedrooms are air-conditioned and en-suite. Similarly designed but in individual colours of red, blue and green, the rooms have colourful old Sicilian tiles on occasional tables, cotto floor tiles, original artwork, and large, comfy beds with memory-foam mattresses and gorgeously soft linen sheets.

Bathrooms

The well-appointed en-suite shower rooms have modern fixtures and fittings and Sicilian floor tiles laid in Sixties-inspired patterns in the corresponding colour to the bedroom.

Kitchen

Like the rest of the house’s interior, old and new combine in the tactile materials of this locally made, stand-out kitchen. The gloriously rich Farrow & Ball green of the chevron-patterned wooden units are complemented by the smooth white marble countertops on the large island and the two tall dark-wood, glass-fronted cupboards with their ornate jungle-inspired back panels. The island houses a wine fridge and a five-burner gas hob, while the half-hidden pantry houses a double fridge, a second sink, the dishwasher and a washing machine and tumble dryer. This is a joyful space in which to cook and socialise, or you can sit back and relax while a local chef does the 'hard' work for you.

Living rooms

At one end of the open-plan living space, with its traditional dark cotto floor and whitewashed beamed ceiling, is a large sitting area. A comfortable corner sofa in mustard yellow and a couple of designer armchairs make for a cosy living space, with a modern design wood-burning stove for cooler days. At the other end of the room is an old wooden farmhouse dining table with six Italian design chairs lit by two beautiful gold-coloured pendant lights. In the warmer months guests can dine outside on the adjacent terrace looking out over the rolling countryside.

Other rooms

There is a guest toilet on the ground floor.

Outside

The property is surrounded by wonderful old trees, including olive trees and a beautiful big cherry tree next to the front door. The bedrooms and living area look out onto the terraced garden, which is fenced, blending into the hills and valley beyond. The veranda runs along the same side and includes a dining table and seating area with access from both the kitchen and the sitting room. Steps lead down a prettily planted bank to the 14mx4m pool where there are shaded sun loungers to relax on with the same mighty view.

Notes

La Solda's owners are both passionate art collectors and several works from their collection are on display in the house. Unique pieces by the Dutch artists Erwin Olaf and Henrik Kerstens can be found in every room and in the open-plan living and dining room an impressive painting by the Sicilian artist Sergio Fiorentino informed the room's colour scheme of mustard-yellow, rich blue and dark grey. There is complementary soap, shower gel and shampoo organically produced in Umbria using essential oils for guests' use.

Your villa and Covid-19

To prevent any possible spread of Covid-19 and to enable you to enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday, all our villas are cleaned to the highest standard possible, and according to the latest Italian health and safety regulations.

Perfect hygiene: to ensure an exceptional level of hygiene in all our villas, we’ve worked with our owners to create a Covid-19 villa management protocol. Based on recommendations from the World Health Organisation, and in compliance with current Italian national law, this protocol goes above and beyond our usual rigorous cleaning standards.

Prior to arrival, your villa will have been fully sanitised, including all surfaces, objects, kitchen items, curtains, sofas, throws, pillows, toys, and in and around the pool. You are welcome to ask for a detailed list of the entire cleaning procedure we do after each departure and before welcoming new guests to the property.

The owner of this house has complied with the following standards:

  • To ensure the necessary information concerning social distancing and the use of masks is available to all guests
  • To guarantee availability of and accessibility to hand hygiene systems with hydro-alcoholic solutions and soaps in all inside areas of, and pertaining to, the villa
  • To guarantee cleaning and disinfection of all areas according to national authority guidelines. Further information is available on request
  • For the swimming pool: to guarantee the efficacy of the water treatments, while respecting legal limits (the parameter for free active chlorine in the pool is between 1.0 – 1.5 mg/l; combined chlorine ≤ 0.40 mg/l; pH 6.5 – 7.5 or equivalent oxygen)
  • For air conditioning systems: to guarantee the air re-circulation function is switched off and, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, with the plant in off-mode, to clean the air filters of the heating/cooling plants that use heat pumps, fan coils and convectors, at the end of each stay
