Villa Lagotto

Villa Lagotto is the triumphant result of a bold yet sensitive restoration, blending old with new and celebrating modern Italian design

This handsome three-storey villa sits proudly in the Umbrian hills, flanked by a pristine pool. The original stone house has been carefully restored with the addition of further ground-floor wings in modernist styles that flatter and enhance the main building.

Villa Lagotto has four spacious, en-suite double bedrooms on the upper two floors while the living space stretches out across the extended ground floor, encouraging an easy flow between the house and the exterior.

Many of the design pieces inside the house were tailor-made for the owners. Most of the lights, the library, the kitchen and two of the beds are by Emanuel Gargano, an Italian designer and winner of the Compasso d’Oro award.

Brick, barrel-vaulted ceilings, cotto floors and antique wood furniture fit harmoniously with the mid-century modern aesthetic. There are earthy colours offset by richer tones, and many usually angular lines have been softened with a curve. The whole effect is beautifully cohesive, the stylised modernity softened by the natural materials, an abundance of texture and the enormous views.

Outside, the clean lines of the 16mx4m pool are a focal point if you can draw your eyes away from the rolling hills. There is a covered dining area with a serious pizza oven and plenty of spaces to socialise or enjoy some solitude.

The villa is a short drive from the small town of Guardea. A little further away is Orvieto, one of Umbria’s loveliest hilltop towns where the famous cathedral has a gold mosaic façade. The property enjoys total privacy without being remote.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

There are four spacious en-suite bedrooms, each individually decorated but sharing the same exquisite level of comfort and design. The soft plaster pinks and gentle greys of the walls and ceilings are offset by the richer tones of the fabrics and the en-suite shower rooms. The windows have excellent coverings to block the light at night while the beds are made up with cool linens. Each room benefits from floor cooling and mosquito nets. The two big beds are Emanuel Gargano designs.

Bathrooms

All of the bedrooms have en-suite shower rooms with high-performance fixtures and fittings. The rich colours picked out in the bedrooms continue in the en suites, which celebrate Moroccan influences of curves and arches. Please note, there are no baths in this property.

Kitchen

The sleek kitchen design has an industrial aesthetic of shiny steel, softened by wooden cabinetry and anchored by a black ceiling. Expertly equipped, the main appliances are by Nef. The long island includes two five-ring induction hobs while two ovens are on the wall behind. There are two fridges, two sinks and a tall wine fridge (wine to be paid for separately). Guests can use the high-end coffee machine, bread kneader and teppanyaki grill. There is plenty of space for culinary creativity and a wall rack of beautiful copper pans are there for guests’ use.

Living rooms

The ground floor in the original building, the formal barn, is a long room with a brick, barrel-vaulted ceiling and a brick floor. In the main part of the room is a beautiful antique, dark wood refectory table and a vast wall dresser with antique plates. Two thirds of the way along, modernist shelving acts as a seemingly floating room divider. Beyond this is a sitting room with an open fire. One of the additions to the villa is a garden room that is built onto an outside wall and has Crittall-style windows and doors that make up the three other walls. This beautiful modernist space serves as a sitting room as well as a dining room with a large circular table. The third living space is a home office and sitting room. Occupying another new addition to the original building, it has a vast picture window that looks out onto the pool and beyond.

Other rooms

There is a washing machine and tumble dryer in the laundry room near to the kitchen. Here is also a bathroom with shower. There are two separate loos, as well as a shower next to the pool.
