Camastra

Sharp lines and smooth curves mix with beautiful tiles and local stone in this delightful three-bedroom villa for six

Camastra is the genius of a team of young architects from Milan. Their clean, calm design is a fresh take on the traditional properties of Puglia and offers a delightful retreat for a small group of family and friends.

Respectful of its fabulous setting in an ancient olive grove close to the glorious white towns of the Itria Valley, the property is separated into two buildings, with the linear suite of outside kitchen, dining and sitting ‘rooms’ set between the two, next to a beautiful pool. The flat-roofed larger building contains the three en-suite double bedrooms while the other houses the indoor kitchen and living room.

The original design is beautiful. A tribute to natural, local materials with a colour palette that reflects the olive trees and rich soil, the decoration is perfectly judged. A step up from minimalism, each piece has earned its place, creating a refreshing and interesting interior that is calming and restful, too.

Camastra is a brilliant stepping-off point for so much of what draws people to this fabulous corner of Italy. There are the baroque towns, the trulli villages and the magical coastline. It’s a foodie paradise and an antique hunter’s dream. It’s also the perfect place to rest and reset, which is what this exquisite villa was expressly designed for.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The three double en-suite bedrooms occupy their own building which is flat-roofed with a zig-zag external staircase to the roof. Here, simplicity equals luxury. Each room is a delightfully calm space with beautiful stone floors and recessed shelves. You can lie in bed and look out over the olive grove through a huge floor to ceiling pivot door. Thanks to the shaded overhang of the building, the rooms’ heat and light levels are naturally regulated, and the beds are super comfy, meaning you will sleep really well.

Bathrooms

The en-suites are as elegant in their simplicity as the bedrooms, with walk-in showers that have beautiful zellige tiles and hi-spec brushed brass fixtures and fittings.

Kitchen

The kitchen’s vaulted ceiling, soft white walls and beautiful stone floor are entirely expected. The island, however, is a delightful surprise. Clad in olive-green tiles, it uses traditional materials to create a modern centrepiece that is as much a work of art as a functional piece of built-in furniture. Open shelving behind and a designer strip light suspended over the work surface, as well as beautiful ceramics and carefully chosen artwork, make this well-equipped kitchen an inspiring place to cook and be in. There is an outdoor kitchen too, accessed through the external door that brings in beautiful natural light.

Living rooms

The indoor living room is the perfect place to retreat to in the heat of the day, while outside, the linear suite of sitting, dining and kitchen space with built-in furniture is just the spot for a poolside holiday of rest and relaxation.

Outside

Camastra sits in an ancient olive grove and the property’s clever design honours its beautiful position. While the olive trees are a century old, the Mediterranean garden is still in its infancy. Guests will spend much of their time outside, shaded by the pergola and lounging by the pool, if they aren’t jumping in it. A smooth terrace means shoes are redundant unless you want to walk or bike through the surrounding countryside. The simple built-in furniture, including the dining table, kitchen and sofa, make holiday living an easy joy. The property is encircled by a low stone wall, is private and yet it’s just a short hop to some of the prettiest towns and coastline that Puglia has to offer.

Notes

Camastra was completed in May 2024 and will be ready for our first guests from the start of June. Some images are renders and we will add more photographs shortly.
