La Contessa

This elegant villa has been restored with the lightest of touches and offers a chic and comfortable stay in this delightful corner of Puglia

La Contessa is an 18th century villa for ten that sits among the olive groves and dry-stone walls of sun-baked Salento, right down in the south of mainland Italy.

Once owned by one of the oldest noble families of the region, the Tafuri family, fittingly it has been restored and renovated by a local Italian and his French wife with the same lightness of touch they have brought to the neighbouring properties: Il Barone and La Baronessa, all on walking distance from each other.

The house is a glorious celebration of the soft Puglian light, with sand-coloured interiors and natural materials. Outside, the ancient wisteria-clad loggia with its original frescos and stone benches whispers full-on Italian romance, while inside, nothing is superfluous and what has been introduced perfectly accentuates the noble architecture.

Five large, double en-suite bedrooms accommodate guests in privacy and comfort while the living spaces are light, large and lovely. Particular attention has been paid to the use of local, natural materials, a soft colour palette that reflects the landscape and a lighting scheme that mixes antique with modern.

Guests will be drawn outside, to jump in the pool, soak up the sun or rest in the shade on whichever side of the house suits the mood or moment. A car is essential for exploring the neighbouring Baroque towns and villages and for getting to the coast. Once there, walk through the pine forest to a rocky cove in the Porto Selvaggio nature reserve. This is the best of Puglia and La Contessa is the perfect villa.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

There are five en-suite bedrooms: four on the ground floor and one on the first floor. Here, the pitched terracotta tiled roof has been finished with cannicciato – a reed matting that was traditionally used for light and ventilation. This room leads onto a vast terrace with impressive views. The architecture, including barrel-vaulted ceilings and beautiful stone walls, provides all the decoration required, while the careful edit of antique and modern furniture is exquisitely unfussy, with large, comfy beds and crisp white sheets. All the bedrooms have air conditioning.

Bathrooms

All the bathrooms are en-suite. Four have showers and one of the ground-floor rooms has a delightfully grand curved bath with a shower above. Basins are sculptural works of art in marble and stone with brass taps and soft plaster colours provide simplicity and elegance.

Kitchen

The fully equipped kitchen is off the sitting room and has an arched door to the dining terrace beyond. Beautiful wooden units on either side complement the stone arch that houses the hob and the sink. While not large it has everything required whether you choose to cook for yourselves or hand over to a chef.

Living rooms

The ground floor has an impressive star-vaulted dining room with doors to the terrace where there’s the original lovely double star-vaulted loggia. The elegant indoor dining table is impressively sculptural and seats ten, while guests can also dine in the shade of an old walnut tree on a terrace outside the kitchen. The sitting room has an L shaped sofa and is suffused in soft light with high stone walls and a door to the loggia. The original cocciopesto flooring stretches thoughout.

Outside

La Contessa is approached through electric gates and a gravel drive and is the next property along from Il Barone on a small country lane. The scenic entrance leads to a beautiful star-vaulted loggia with old stone benches and original frescos, with climbing vines and wisteria adding to the romance. The terrace circles the house and guests can dine in the shade of a centuries-old walnut tree outside the kitchen. The grounds, enclosed by ancient dry-stone walls, stretch across two hectares and include a large pool with shaded loungers, lawn, olive trees and Mediterranean planting. It’s a beautiful spot, entirely private and yet not far from the nearest shop and the coast.

Notes

La Contessa is the sister property to La Baronessa and Il Barone, all of which have been restored and renovated by the same family and all on walking distance of each other.

The delightful Baroque town of Nardò is just 8km from the villa and its Piazza Salandra is the perfect place to soak up the town’s atmosphere. Its location, south of Lecce and north of Gallipoli, on the Salentine peninsula, has given Nardò a rich history, best explored through food and architecture – in this case, fabulous fresh seafood and delicious pasticcerie, and a mix of Byzantine and Baroque palaces, chapels and churches. The Ionian coast is just a few kilometres away and its stunning mix of clear water, rocky coves and sandy beaches is not to be missed. In particular, the Porto Selvaggio nature reserve’s pine forest-fringed wild beaches are wonderful. Discover Santa Caterina with its seafront restaurants and Santa Maria al Bagno for its beautiful cove. Lecce, otherwise known as the Florence of the South, is also a must. Cited as one of the most beautiful cities in southern Italy, it is heralded for its baroque splendour and the incredible light as the sun bounces of the white stone.
