Pettirosso

Il Pettirosso is a work of art in itself, designed for living in, on and around. A stunning pool forms the heart of the external living space and contemporary artworks adorn both the interior and exterior

Il Pettirosso is a unique property designed by an eminent artist-architect. Beautifully located in the unspoiled Carovigno countryside, it is surrounded by olive groves, moments from the Adriatic.

The property occupies different buildings that interconnect around a courtyard. A fabulous outdoor living space, there is a stunning pool and lots of places to sit and socialise, find privacy with a book or to take advantage of an inviting snooze in the shade.

Site-specific artworks are dotted in and around the property, which is a playful, sculptural mix of varying shapes and heights, gently connected by stairs and narrow walkways. The central themes are nature and art, which harmoniously co-exist.

Six guests are accommodated in three bedrooms, all of which are painted entirely in black. There is no indoor living room but these interesting design choices show authentic style and work wonderfully for art-minded people.

While the living here is easy, it would be a shame not to drag yourself away from the comfort of the house and pool to discover the multiple diversions close by, from the Baroque towns of Ostuni and Lecce to the stunning beaches and a nature reserve on the coast.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The three double en-suite bedrooms occupy separate units positioned round a delightful courtyard. The first is in an annex next to the trullo, overlooking the pool, and has a shower with a view through its exterior glass walls. Accessed through doors from the courtyard and with air conditioning, the rooms remain cool. Each one is painted entirely black inside, ceilings and floors included, creating cocoon-like interiors decorated with unique art.

Bathrooms

The pared-back en-suites, also in black, have high-quality showers and there is a guest loo as well as two simple outdoor showers.

Kitchen

The kitchen looks out onto the exterior dining area in the courtyard. A characteristic design, it is expertly equipped and includes a gas hob and an electric oven. The property draws its guests outside and meals made with the abundance of fresh produce available locally are eaten at the long wooden table under the shady awning in the courtyard. There is a BBQ and a simple outdoor kitchen.

Living rooms

There is no internal living room, as such. The trullo can be used as a sitting area: it contains a trompe l’oeil Studio Front for Skitsch bookcase, and an impressive art installation. Otherwise, life is lived outside at Il Pettirosso. A roof terrace with comfy seating is perfect for an early morning yoga practice or for watching the sunset, while in the heat of the day life revolves around the courtyard. Full of shady nooks, comfy cushions, an outsized low-rise daybed, hammocks and a big wooden dining table under an awning, as well as the stunning pool, all shaded by olive trees and the lee of the buildings, this is the heart of the property.

Accessibility

Outside

This is a property that is cleverly set up for outdoor living and where the big yet intimate courtyard is a multi-faceted room in itself, full of artwork and the natural shade and beauty of olive and other trees. The exquisite pool has one side made of stone and it fits naturally into its setting, splash-proof distance from the outsized daybed and the long dining table. There are plenty of spaces for privacy as well as social connection, including the roof terrace. Playfully designed with artworks such as the huge nest on one roof and the hand sculpture next to the dome of the trullo, there are endless points of interest but nothing that interrupts the intimacy and peacefulness of the space. The separate units are connected by a narrow iron walkway up high and the exterior of the buildings is a playful mix of sculptural shapes.
