Santacroce

Natural materials and a pared-back colour palette have been used to transform this four-coned building into an exquisitely stylish and comfortable holiday house

This unique and stylishly restored four-cone Puglian property is surrounded by olive and citrus groves. As well as its peaceful rural location, it is close to both the pretty white towns of the Itria Valley and the stunning Adriatic coast.

Trullo Santacroce is the fabulous result of an inspired restoration by a team of dedicated experts. They sought to renovate the building using traditional materials and methods, keeping its old feel while ensuring modern-day comfort and style to serve guests’ 21st century needs.

Inside, there is a Scandinavian aesthetic thanks to a pared-back colour palette of creams and whites with a soft black for the kitchen cupboards and any fixtures and fittings. Natural materials such as light wood, stone, woven grass, rope, linen and cotton continue the Scandi aesthetic, creating a tactile and calming interior where guests can comfortably relax in style. Architecturally, each niche, arch and curve has been cleverly appropriated, from the perfect shower ‘cubicle’ to a cosy reading nook with the required lighting, all celebrating the building’s rich history.

Outside, the detailing is equally exacting, balancing style, comfort and function. The beautiful pool is lined in a dark colour which when the water is still, offers a perfect reflection of the building.

Holidays are for eating, sleeping and occasionally doing, and guests’ needs are ably catered for here, both inside and out. However, the exquisite location also makes the property rich in venturing opportunities. Whether it’s beach days or marveling at Baroque architecture, dining out on the delicious local produce or enjoying a vineyard tour and tasting, there is a little something for everyone.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The two en-suite bedrooms share the same minimal yet warm design as the rest of the property, thanks to the use of natural materials and a simple colour palette. The bedrooms have high ceilings, large double beds and smooth floors that are perfect for bare feet. One of the rooms has a single built-in day bed that could accommodate another guest, while the wardrobe is a simple hanging rail.

Bathrooms

The en-suite showers make excellent use of the building’s alcoves and the black of the high-spec fixtures and fittings pairs beautifully with the simple arched glass doors.
There is a third shower beside the pool.

Kitchen

The small but perfectly equipped kitchen has sleek matt black cabinetry that runs the length of one wall where there is a big square window behind the sink halfway along. With a traditional stone floor and natural-coloured walls, it is sophisticated and sparing, while simultaneously offering everything guests will need during their stay. There is also an outdoor kitchen with a wood-fired oven.

Living rooms

The living room is a sophisticated mix of tradition and modernity, informed by the room’s architectural features. A small fireplace has a sculptural form and the mantelpiece and a niche next to it are used to display local ceramics. An alcove has been repurposed as a cosy seating area and the round wooden dining table and accompanying chairs are designer Italian pieces that fit and flatter the space. Guests will be drawn outside to a large and comfy built-in corner sofa, to the loungers by the pool or to dine in the shade next to the outdoor kitchen.

Outside

The property lies in amongst the citrus and olive groves of the Itria Valley and is surrounded by a traditional stone wall. By day, the beautiful southern Italian light shows off the careful restoration of the property’s cones and the sharp silhouette of the steps leading to the roof, which are artfully lit by night. The landscaping surrounding the building includes olive and cypress trees as well as Mediterranean cactus, with paths of light gravel and a smooth stone pool surround. The dark-lined pool with its infinity edge is the garden’s centrepiece and acts as a reflecting pond. The corner sofa, outdoor kitchen and shaded dining table offer guests a sophisticated outdoor living space and enough room to socialise together or seek solitude for a snooze or to delve into a good book.
